So much for staying informed!<br /><br /><em>Ventriloquizzing,</em> the band's fourth album, is due out on January 25, 2011 via <a href="http://www.yeproc.com/" target="blank">Yep Roc</a> in the US and on January 17, 2011 via <a href="http://www.fulltimehobby.co.uk/" target="blank">Full Time Hobby</a> in the UK.<br /><br />Based on preview track "Sixteen Shades Of Black And Blue," the band sounds a bit sinister and, well, weird this time around. It's a good weird...I think. I couldn't really get into their last record so I'm curious to hear the full length. The tracklisting of the album follows below:<br /><br />1. Ventriloquizzing<br />2. Ladies and gentlemen, I present you: <a href="http://www.theworldofmirrors.com/" target="blank">Mirrors</a>. "Ways To An End" is the Brighton, UK band's first single on venerable old dance label <a href="http://www.skint.net/" target="blank">Skint</a>.<br /><br />I first heard the b-side "Broken By Silence" at a bar Sunday night and was sufficiently smitten enough to run to the DJ booth to find out what it was. After downloading the single today I was happy to find that the a-side is even better.<br /><br />If I had to describe the single I'd say it's like a modern meeting of "Beautiful World" by Devo and "Doctor! Doctor!" by Thompson Twins. Which is to say that it's a) rather synthy and b) immediately reminiscent of things you remember from 27 years ago, in a very good way.<br /><br />"Ways To An End" was released last month on <a href="http://www.recordstore.co.uk/productdetail.jsp?productPK=unittest-CB0HjIboVVPEthBDqN3IEb-1" target="blank">7-inch vinyl</a> and is also available for download at <a href="http://www.emusic.com/album/Mirrors-Ways-To-An-End-MP3-Download/12076588.html" target="blank">eMusic</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Ways-To-An-End/dp/B003Z6X29C" target="blank">Amazon</a>, <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/ways-to-an-end-ep/id386155984" target="blank">iTunes</a>, etc. You can get a free demo of "Organ Song" by signing up to their mailing list <a href="http://www.myspace.com/mirrorsmirrorsmirrors" target="blank">here</a>. A full-length album is expected in February.<br /><br />How many references can you spot in the video?<br /><br /><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lOBRcG-Dhtg?fs=" width="425" height="344" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" hl="en_US"></embed>Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-43561965325480450332009-12-10T09:57:00.000-08:002009-12-10T10:48:53.195-08:00Chase The Tear<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaXEk50AtBQTq4IcBLvhXxfkBHpwNa7X3suPXPabZORvoTUB9im71hhjCKhpscWiLzntOguBabkGLwt5PzpWh3fFAdkhYhvucGd0bQv01cBS3TsjK8evIZkIBSYetz3GN0_7mBJRoH9eg/s1600-h/portishead-chase_the_tear.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413668555404331762" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 250px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaXEk50AtBQTq4IcBLvhXxfkBHpwNa7X3suPXPabZORvoTUB9im71hhjCKhpscWiLzntOguBabkGLwt5PzpWh3fFAdkhYhvucGd0bQv01cBS3TsjK8evIZkIBSYetz3GN0_7mBJRoH9eg/s320/portishead-chase_the_tear.jpg" border="0" /></a>Famously unprolific band <a href="http://www.portishead.co.uk/" target="blank">Portishead</a> have released a new track in support of <a href="http://www.amnesty.org.uk/" target="blank">Amnesty International</a>. "Chase The Tear" is available for download exclusively through <a href="http://www.7digital.com/portisheadamnesty" target="blank">7digital</a> with all proceeds going to the human rights organization.<br /><br />I've already downloaded it - it's a dollar for a good cause - and I imagine the song will be on repeat for a good chunk of the day. It's largely electronic and less bleak and sparse than the last album. Which is not to say it's a party record, of course. It'll be interesting to see if this is the direction they're headed.<br /><br />This new track comes on the heels of <a href="http://pitchfork.com/news/36621-portishead-working-on-new-album/" target="blank">news</a> that Portishead are in the studio working on the follow-up to last year's <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Third-Portishead/dp/B0016HNOXQ" target="blank">Third</a></em>. That's fast work considering the eleven year gap between their last two studio albums. Not that I'm complaining.<br /><br />Here's the video:<br /><br /><param value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zaqKIJrnm2M&hl=en_US&fs=1&" name="movie"></param><param value="true" name="allowFullScreen"></param><param value="always" name="allowscriptaccess"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zaqKIJrnm2M&hl=" width="560" height="340" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" fs="1&" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-79089769737335302732009-09-16T15:18:00.000-07:002009-09-17T00:43:51.682-07:00Tubular Bells<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfIgdaBl05DCdR-DlxQCe3REiY6jatlwctlpNHIxVndifPx1Rx08oFCM1v4cGpUZFP645jp8kVGx29f1W623AfxC7sFFnHi-kJzTlu5b0lwDxd6z5-BmvyvTbRzw2a7AG00ml_Aai4vcU/s1600-h/bookoflove.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 250px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382197907338285954" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfIgdaBl05DCdR-DlxQCe3REiY6jatlwctlpNHIxVndifPx1Rx08oFCM1v4cGpUZFP645jp8kVGx29f1W623AfxC7sFFnHi-kJzTlu5b0lwDxd6z5-BmvyvTbRzw2a7AG00ml_Aai4vcU/s320/bookoflove.jpg" /></a>80s club hit makers <a href="http://www.bookoflovemusic.com/" target="blank">Book of Love</a> have announced a September 25 <a href="http://www.highlineballroom.com/bio.php?id=1133" target="blank">show</a> at New York's Highline Ballroom to commemorate the silver anniversary (25 years? It can't be!) of their self-titled debut album as well as the re-release of their catalog.<br /><br />I don't remember seeing it reported anywhere at the time, but the band's <a href="http://www.sirerecords.com/" target="blank">Sire Records</a> catalog was remastered - bulked up with the usual remixes, demos, live tracks, and rarities - and released back in May by <a href="http://www.ccmusic.com/" target="blank">Noble Rot/Collector's Choice</a>. In most cases, it's because there seems to be no rhyme or reason to what they do. My relationship with them pretty much equates to a battered wife situation: I offer support in the form of hard-earned cash, they beat me, and I come back for more.<br /><br />What's got me all hot and bothered lately is deluxe editions. Don't get me wrong, I love a good deluxe edition of a classic album as much as the next music fan but there are records that deserve it (REM's <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Murmur-Deluxe-r-e-m/dp/B001H5HWSU" target="blank">Murmur</a></em> comes to mind) and those that don't (The Gin Blossoms' <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/New-Miserable-Experience-Gin-Blossoms/dp/B00006JKCL" target="blank">New Miserable Experience</a></em>? Really?).<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmIvBstQENWqehpdE4hMfQLzBo4eCjrKoufe-k7lQxPjPEBBrTTepVYewruAUes0WNr5m1YSWNiB03G8dzW3CIxWIfwYm7OPLtii-umRxVEzG2wbflyTyQZorbdjNa3Tr9RK7Eh1n82pk/s1600-h/batforlashes-twosuns.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 250px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379359906197038418" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmIvBstQENWqehpdE4hMfQLzBo4eCjrKoufe-k7lQxPjPEBBrTTepVYewruAUes0WNr5m1YSWNiB03G8dzW3CIxWIfwYm7OPLtii-umRxVEzG2wbflyTyQZorbdjNa3Tr9RK7Eh1n82pk/s320/batforlashes-twosuns.jpg" /></a>The criteria for a deluxe edition once seemed to be: is the record a classic? Does it deserve this treatment? Is there bonus material to make it worth buying again? Does it make any sense? The latest epidemic of deluxe editions of records mere months after they were originally released flies in the face of that thinking, turning admittedly fine records into classics before "earning" it.<br /><br />In the coming weeks the indie music fan will decide whether or not to buy deluxe editions of records that have been out about a year or less:<br /><br />The Friendly Fires <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Friendly-Fires/dp/B002HWRMNC" target="blank">record</a> has been out since July of 2008. The deluxe edition is out now and includes a bonus DualDisc with new single "Kiss Of Life," remixes, videos, and a concert filmed in May.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOrhHaViGvPEKfq5txnW7yMqPgP99EyPbcPmuPIi9UHSrgOkf9XvOFETu21qgyiri3aT6OtqRDxNgksDjV30j9WpqrdPwB1lyLsFiFOXPtHGdW_qKDKtTeGOJyQHbwAxahS7gOt_YcOFE/s1600-h/feverray.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 227px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379360350338116130" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOrhHaViGvPEKfq5txnW7yMqPgP99EyPbcPmuPIi9UHSrgOkf9XvOFETu21qgyiri3aT6OtqRDxNgksDjV30j9WpqrdPwB1lyLsFiFOXPtHGdW_qKDKtTeGOJyQHbwAxahS7gOt_YcOFE/s320/feverray.jpg" /></a><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Suns-Deluxe-Incl-Bonus-Tracks/dp/B002IN81DA" target="blank"><em>Two Suns</em></a> by Bat For Lashes has been out since April. The deluxe edition dropped this week and boasts eight bonus tracks and a documentary DVD.<br /><br />Fever Ray's self-titled <a href="http://pitchfork.com/news/36317-new-fever-ray-single-deluxe-lp-due/" target="blank">album</a> was released in March. The deluxe edition comes out October 12 and has bonus tracks and a DVD of videos.<br /><br />These are good records. They may even be worthy of a deluxe edition ten years in the future. But do they deserve a deluxe edition now, months after their original release? And what of the fans who have already bought the album? The new versions have been padded with decent bonus material that a fan would want but they'll surely feel a little put out to have to buy the album again.<br /><br />I guess the point is that if you buy an album early, more and more often you can expect to have to buy it again within the year. So what is the savvy record buyer to do? Wait a year just to be sure a deluxe edition isn't released? I highly doubt the record companies would like that but they're not really respecting their consumer so why should the consumer respect them? It's no wonder people can't be bothered to buy music anymore.Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-60409722902093954152009-09-02T14:51:00.001-07:002009-09-02T16:05:15.575-07:00When Michael Jackson Dies, We're Covering "Blackbird"<a style="CLEAR: left; FLOAT: left; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 1em; MARGIN-RIGHT: 1em; cssfloat: left" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiATWrasGKxbvJC_ArhHMG5Q_w3tDfL2LnZK6O4ME1HWriFLskrWvwlAWygLHe1BTwHSC3zG8dCv9O5oGqcdXj0OlqeCJkmqTAD_ogPDWsHaAfA9UNTi36TENuF7WP-gWyUJwqBxIjHLGU/s1600-h/dandywarhols-blackbird.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiATWrasGKxbvJC_ArhHMG5Q_w3tDfL2LnZK6O4ME1HWriFLskrWvwlAWygLHe1BTwHSC3zG8dCv9O5oGqcdXj0OlqeCJkmqTAD_ogPDWsHaAfA9UNTi36TENuF7WP-gWyUJwqBxIjHLGU/s320/dandywarhols-blackbird.jpg" border="0" lk="true" /></a>The title song of <a href="http://www.dandywarhols.com/" target="blank">The Dandy Warhols</a>' <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Welcome-Monkey-House-Dandy-Warhols/dp/B0000AKX8G" target="blank">Welcome To The Monkey House</a></em> contained the lyrics:<br /><br />"Wire's coming back again,<br />Elastica got sued by them<br />When Michael Jackson dies,<br />We're covering Blackbird.<br />But won't it be absurd, then<br />When no one knows<br />what song they just heard<br />Unless someone on the radio<br />tells them first?"<br /><br />I've always thought these lyrics - the Michael Jackson line in particular - were hilarious; mostly because I'm a huge nerd who loves music industry in-jokes, but also because MJ's death seemed so unimaginable and far off that I figured the band would be covering "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackbird_(song)" target="blank">Blackbird</a>" in their 70s.<br /><br />But then he died, and the first things I thought of - aside from Jesus Christ, is this really happening? - were: a) who is going to get The Beatles <a href="http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/jackson.asp" target="blank">publishing rights</a> and b) are The Dandys going to make good on their promise?<br /><br />It's anybody's guess who will get The Beatles publishing rights but The Dandy Warhols cover of "Blackbird" was released yesterday on the band's <a href="http://www.beattheworld.com/" target="blank">Beat The World</a> label and is available as a digital download from their <a href="http://www.dandywarhols.com/" target="blank">site</a> as well as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Blackbird/dp/B002NISI42" target="blank">Amazon</a>, etc. Genius!Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-83731581951111036472009-08-29T10:55:00.000-07:002009-08-29T16:39:23.868-07:00Don't Stop!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge-cCfpEcer3IG4qiipYd6N-_0FCKUOzk2nZkrsm5vGTSyeDKb2MZ5YcbR4bzTMqF2fYdbLEruA3O16hssN2gAgGrLovA0gh04TdkcSi85-UyI-Hk00luzLv3H7Q7g7PYuurI0KO8AcAE/s1600-h/annie-dontstop.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 250px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375448229321789138" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge-cCfpEcer3IG4qiipYd6N-_0FCKUOzk2nZkrsm5vGTSyeDKb2MZ5YcbR4bzTMqF2fYdbLEruA3O16hssN2gAgGrLovA0gh04TdkcSi85-UyI-Hk00luzLv3H7Q7g7PYuurI0KO8AcAE/s320/annie-dontstop.jpg" /></a>The tale of <a href="http://www.myspace.com/anniemusic" target="blank">Annie</a>'s second full-length album is a long one. It was initially announced over a year ago and all seemed to be going well: the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">tracklist</span> was out there, the album leaked and <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">Popjustice</span> <a href="http://www.popjustice.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2503&Itemid=9" target="blank">called it</a> a "complete modern masterpiece," the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Know-Ur-Girlfriend-Hates-Me/dp/B001BDZH8U" target="blank">first single</a> was released...but then there were delays, label troubles, Annie was in the studio retooling things, and ultimately she left <a href="http://www.islandrecords.co.uk/" target="blank">Island</a> and took the album with her.<br /><br />During the wait Annie's long-awaited (and utterly brilliant) cover of <a href="http://www.staceyqonline.com/" target="blank">Stacey Q</a>'s "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_of_Hearts" target="blank">Two Of Hearts</a>" was released as a promo but never hit retail.<br /><br />Another single "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Anthonio-Annie/dp/B0027HBA8K" target="blank"><span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">Anthonio</span></a>" was released on Richard X's <a href="http://www.myspace.com/pleasuremasters" target="blank">Pleasure Masters</a> label, backed by some pretty wonderful remixes. The Berlin Breakdown version in particular is amazing, taking a high energy song and turning it into a full-on early Pet Shop Boys ballad.<br /><br />The tale has a happy ending. <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Stop-Annie/dp/B002LIZWVG" target="blank">Don't Stop</a></em> is finally being released on October 19 in the UK and November 17 in the US via <a href="http://www.smalltownsupersound.com/" target="blank"><span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">Smalltown</span> <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">Supersound</span></a>. Their debut LP <em>Navigation</em> and second EP <em>Music For Hairproducts</em> were both released in June on their own <a href="http://happyrobotsrecords.blogspot.com/" target="blank">Happy Robots Records</a>.<br /><br /><em>Navigation</em> continues in the same vein of their <a href="http://fac51xmusic.blogspot.com/2008/04/squarewave-to-heaven.html" target="blank">first EP</a>: indie electro-pop with a bit of an edge. A few of the tracks hearken back to classic New Order and the way they mixed electronics and guitars in that perfectly wistful way. Many of the songs start out slow and build to a glorious noise. I'm also reminded of Section 25 and their cold electro masterpiece "Looking From A Hilltop" in the harder electronic tracks like "Memory." High points are many, but my favorites so far are "Kasparov," "Navigation," and "This City Life."<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbKh0LPxkgHhft4uPgRrhMd_mR8Pbudt6ugbK7WOWJpa0aJt_g1bP9CLLZqKtfycxgzhF7uNoMBF1U5JDMA34Ut5IfO3mvdyka2a2wMscEeqDAWkP-TmA8R4EQHYKZKfx_Soa6ZXaXKqA/s1600-h/arthurandmartha-musicforhairproductsep.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 250px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375212108819673698" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbKh0LPxkgHhft4uPgRrhMd_mR8Pbudt6ugbK7WOWJpa0aJt_g1bP9CLLZqKtfycxgzhF7uNoMBF1U5JDMA34Ut5IfO3mvdyka2a2wMscEeqDAWkP-TmA8R4EQHYKZKfx_Soa6ZXaXKqA/s320/arthurandmartha-musicforhairproductsep.jpg" /></a>The <em>Music For Hairproducts </em>EP features the title track in its original and two remixed versions as well as a b-side and the Laudanum remix of "Autovia" which is particularly lovely, having been stripped of its motorik beat and given a grand orchestral treatment instead. It's not to be missed.<br /><br />Arthur And Martha music can be purchased <a href="http://happyrobots.bigcartel.com/" target="blank">direct from the band</a>, <a href="http://darla.com/index.php?fuseaction=item_cat.ecom_superitem_detail&item_cat_id=36443" target="blank">Darla</a>, or digitally via <a href="http://www.emusic.com/artist/Arthur-and-Martha-MP3-Download/11970973.html" target="blank">eMusic</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0017ADX5G/ref=sr_1_artist_1_rd?ie=UTF8&parent=B002B1N2OW&qid=1251536437&sr=1-1" target="blank">Amazon</a>, or <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?id=277912942" target="blank">iTunes</a>.<br /><br /><br />Video: "Music For Hairproducts"<br /><br /><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3VvO89Jzh0k&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed height="344" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3VvO89Jzh0k&hl=" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" fs="1&"></embed>Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-12937916380395019062009-08-28T19:17:00.000-07:002009-08-28T19:17:49.795-07:00Seancing Songs And Witch Cult Rumbles<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNDH_cb0kUNGAQPkUNQ-x4BML18W3CUlyEUBOSuq_GRBI5GTriPPOEBQ7W42zV_aqQ6ybdEmpX1xS6F4PXIg8Hrh2oieiOYRmiJ4kfpOxgUfura_Q9Z8_rcd86RP88i7rwVBp5fuI2BHs/s1600-h/broadcast.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 250px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375194510086209618" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNDH_cb0kUNGAQPkUNQ-x4BML18W3CUlyEUBOSuq_GRBI5GTriPPOEBQ7W42zV_aqQ6ybdEmpX1xS6F4PXIg8Hrh2oieiOYRmiJ4kfpOxgUfura_Q9Z8_rcd86RP88i7rwVBp5fuI2BHs/s320/broadcast.jpg" /></a>It's been far too quiet in the world of <a href="http://www.broadcast.uk.net/" target="blank">Broadcast</a> for the past few years but that's about to change. A new EP has been announced for release on October 13 via <a href="http://www.warp.net/" target="blank">Warp Records</a>. Precious few details are available but we do know that the EP is a collaboration with <a href="http://www.ghostbox.co.uk/thefocusgroup.htm" target="blank">The Focus Group</a> and has been described as "seancing songs and witch cult rumbles" which, let's face it, could only be amazing. The band's 10th studio album is due on 10/12 from those lovely folks at <a href="http://www.darla.com/" target="blank">Darla</a>.<br /><br />I didn't know their material at all before today which is a shame as it seems like it'd be right up my alley. Darla's write-up of the album says it's "a record that swings wildly between Marrakesh, Eastern Europe, Sevilla and early 80s Manchester without breaking a sweat. Piano Magic have always worn their influences on their sleeves. The Chameleons, Joy Division and The Cure rub shoulders with Turkish darabuka, hammered dulcimer, viola, cello, flamenco claps. Elsewhere there are cold analogue synths, chiming guitars, mournful piano and industrial percussion." SIGN ME UP! It seems like Brendan's voice would work perfectly in that context, so I'm looking forward to hearing the record.<br /><br />In related news, Brendan has a solo album called <em>Ark</em> which should be announced soon. Fans who <a href="http://www.brendan-perry.com/enews/?p=subscribe&id=1" target="blank">sign up</a> for his mailing list can download a rare unreleased Dead Can Dance track called "A Means Of Escape" which is the first professional recording made by the band way back in 1982.<br /><br />Have a listen to Brendan covering Tim Buckley's "Happy Time" way back in 1993, why don't you?<br /><br /><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/moaxbpm1dx0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed height="344" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/moaxbpm1dx0&hl=" fs="1&" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></div>Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-38382632038286967872009-08-27T12:00:00.000-07:002009-08-27T17:30:22.939-07:00Eins, Zwei, Drei, Vier, Fünf, Sechs, Sieben, Acht!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivhA3mZw32tuS4UBJwGn73FkREN7eSciKu_9uhK_KU37cK88wxW_cJxHccxCh9x8yo090W5VdxKGndSax3GUmGXO-Yk4x33cmoHdGdcLjUZ9wi7NPewmjbEyrTm2PzCGwXAJqFowVT3CU/s1600-h/kraftwerk-catalogue.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374723236448786738" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 250px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivhA3mZw32tuS4UBJwGn73FkREN7eSciKu_9uhK_KU37cK88wxW_cJxHccxCh9x8yo090W5VdxKGndSax3GUmGXO-Yk4x33cmoHdGdcLjUZ9wi7NPewmjbEyrTm2PzCGwXAJqFowVT3CU/s320/kraftwerk-catalogue.jpg" border="0" /></a>Shocker! <a href="http://www.kraftwerk.com/" target="blank">Kraftwerk</a>'s <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Catalogue" target="blank">The Catalogue</a></em> is finally being released on October 6 via Astralwerks (October 5 in the UK via Mute)!<br /><br />Those who have been following the saga know that the albums <em>Autobahn</em>, <em>Radio-Activity</em>, <em>Trans-Europe Express</em>, <em>The Man-Machine</em>, <em>Computer World</em>, <em>Techno Pop</em>, <em>The Mix</em>, and <em>Tour de France</em> were remastered earlier in the decade but were never released. The word on the street is that the band was unhappy with the result and undertook an entirely new remastering job. Hope they sound good!<br /><br />On to the details: The box set features eight CDs housed in mini-vinyl card wallet sleeves along with a booklet for each album. The albums will also be released individually on CD, vinyl, and as digital downloads. Due to licensing restrictions, only five of the albums will be available in the US outside of the box set. A <a href="http://www.amazon.de/German-Box-Set-Kraftwerk/dp/B002LYC29A" target="blank">German language version</a> is slated for release October 2.<br /><br />The cover art for each album been reworked to some degree which irks a purist like me, but I will admit they do look a bit like a cohesive set now. Word is there will be additional artwork but loads of bonus tracks aren't likely as the band doesn't have much unreleased material.<br /><br />Watch a short promo video for the set:<br /><br /><param value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eb5MOPGo0K4&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0" name="movie"></param><param value="true" name="allowFullScreen"></param><param value="always" name="allowscriptaccess"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eb5MOPGo0K4&hl=" width="425" height="344" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" fs="1&rel=" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-12143530205199435502009-08-27T00:44:00.000-07:002009-08-27T01:45:11.883-07:00Asleep In The Back<img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 250px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374546722245802642" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9_DrYBQdfk1ywO_EGSxtdy0AgqPMzTkELjMyVGvaHWbNRE0H5BnaF1j8xYdWA8p8ExAiCe4dL2RkgngGQd2oBkBDPvS3fuMUS001A1xjHvfNt69SmAtkc5EPjm9rPMxh-4aD1woG6xgU/s320/asleep_deluxe.jpg" /> <a href="http://www.elbow.co.uk/" target="blank">Elbow</a>'s <a href="http://www.mercuryprize.com/" target="blank">Mercury Prize</a>-nominated debut album <em><a href="http://www.recordstore.co.uk/productdetail.jsp?productPK=unittest-QloNe4JLRvKwCvSZpN3IEb-1" target="blank">Asleep In The Back</a></em> is getting the deluxe reissue treatment. Polydor will release the 2 CD + DVD package on September 28 (UK; kinda doubt this will get a domestic release but one can hope).<br /><br />The big news is that (most of) the insanely rare <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Noisebox_EP" target="blank">Noisebox EP</a> is included. I haven't seen any explanation of why "George Lassoes The Moon" isn't here but it would be interesting to know why. The Elbow site says that 200 copies of the EP were made and I've seen how much they go for on eBay so the fact that it's included in this set is amazing.<br /><br /><div>My biggest issue with the tracklisting is, where are the period b-sides? I have them all (of course) but maybe they'll turn up on that b-sides collection that's been rumored since before they left V2? I'm not sure where the unreleased videos on the DVD come from. I know there were videos made at the time for the singles but the fact that they all say "previously unreleased" makes me think this is something else. One wonders whether the audio on the DVD will be mixed in 5.1 or if it's strictly just there for visuals. And why are the Noisebox tracks repeated on the DVD? I have too many questions at this point. "Splitting The Atom" will be released on October 5th and it looks to be a digital release with a "nice vinyl package" in the works as well.<br /><br />The EP features Massive Attack mainstays 3D, Daddy G, and Horace Andy on "Splitting The Atom" and <a href="http://www.tvontheradio.com/" target="new">TV on the Radio</a>'s Tunde Adebimpe on "Pray For Rain." It will also include remixes of two new tracks: "Psyche" featuring <a href="http://www.martinatopleybird.com/" target="new">Martina Topley-Bird</a> and "Bulletproof Love" featuring Guy Garvey (<a href="http://www.elbow.co.uk/" target="new">Elbow</a>). The tracklist looks like this:<br /><br />1. Splitting The Atom<br />2. Pray For Rain<br />3. Psyche (Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid Remix)<br />4. Bulletproof Love (Flash Treatment remix by Christoff Berg)<br /><br />The latter two tracks are thought to appear in their original form on the band's fifth LP which is slated for a January/February 2010 release. The album will feature vocal contributions from those mentioned above as well as Damon Albarn (<a href="http://www.blur.co.uk/" target="new">Blur</a>) and <a href="http://www.hopesandoval.com/" target="new">Hope Sandoval</a>. Blaring over the loudspeakers was something that sounded like <a href="http://www.myspace.com/siouxsieandthebanshees" target="blank">Siouxsie And The Banshees</a> circa <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Juju-Siouxsie-Banshees/dp/B000E8NQV8" target="blank">Juju</a></em> being played in the middle of a noisy, bustling middle-eastern market. There were synths, sharp-edged guitars, female vocals, lots of eastern instruments, and a hot beat. I was transfixed!<br /><br />Needless to say, I quickly made for the information counter to find out that I was listening to <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Basta-Rainbow-Arabia/dp/B001D25N42" target="blank">The Basta</a></em>, the first EP from LA-based husband and wife duo <a href="http://www.rainbowarabia.com/" target="blank">Rainbow Arabia</a>. I bought the EP on the spot and can't stop listening to it. It reminds me a bit of <a href="http://www.miauk.com/" target="blank">M.I.A.</a> or <a href="http://www.myspace.com/santogold" target="blank">Santogold</a> (as it would) but it seems to have a bit more of a punk edge to it that I like. A lot.<br /><br />I have since learned that they're recording their first album for release in Spring '09, so I'm looking forward to that. They were also recently featured on <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Perfect-as-Cats-Tribute-Cure/dp/B001GNG45U" target="blank">Perfect As Cats</a></em>, one of the <a href="http://www.thecure.com/" target="blank">Cure</a> tributes I <a href="http://fac51xmusic.blogspot.com/2008/03/blonde-redhead-dandys-to-cover-cure.html" target="blank">wrote about</a> last March. I'm going to have to hunt this down because hearing them cover "Six Different Ways" (from The Cure's eastern-tinged <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Head-Door-Cure/dp/B000GGSM76" target="blank">The Head On The Door</a></em>) could be very cool indeed.<br /><br />The folks at Amoeba followed this up with...ZZ Top. Ugh.<br /><br />Listen:<br /><br /><a title="Rainbow Arabia - Omar K.mp3" href="http://www.snapdrive.net/files/173593/Rainbow%20Arabia%20-%20Omar%20K.mp3">Rainbow Arabia - Omar K</a>Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-9448891995628352072008-12-05T14:43:00.000-08:002008-12-05T16:38:15.923-08:00(More) Years Of Refusal<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmLS6MkDLNCixvAaH7NimN-oXJ1iu5EcxPAXXJzvj1ROnrjaNBaBbS7ljb1VSJJJucEyo9wKbst517zCIwpuPCmxoVpA3h7-xiDtYqMm0GjlrlkfHcq8IXCwv6WrqjS5H3ieGmrVwF2qQ/s1600-h/years+of+refusal.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276441518943726018" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 250px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmLS6MkDLNCixvAaH7NimN-oXJ1iu5EcxPAXXJzvj1ROnrjaNBaBbS7ljb1VSJJJucEyo9wKbst517zCIwpuPCmxoVpA3h7-xiDtYqMm0GjlrlkfHcq8IXCwv6WrqjS5H3ieGmrVwF2qQ/s320/years+of+refusal.jpg" border="0" /></a>You might remember a <a href="http://fac51xmusic.blogspot.com/2008/05/years-of-refusal.html" target="blank">post</a> from way back in May where I mentioned the upcoming <a href="http://www.itsmorrisseysworld.com/" target="blank">Morrissey</a> record <em>Years Of Refusal</em>. It was to have been released in September but was pushed back at the request of the label and now has a UK release date of February 16, 2009.<br /><br />The cover looks to my eyes like a possible homage to <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whipped_Cream_&_Other_Delights" target="blank">Whipped Cream & Other Delights</a></em>. Don't know what the baby is all about, but I think I'd prefer whipped cream.<br /><br />A US tour is scheduled to begin near the release, which is odd considering that (at last <a href="http://true-to-you.net/morrissey_news_080809_01" target="blank">report</a>) he is without a US record deal after having sacked Universal earlier this year due to poor promotion of his latest <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Hits-Deluxe-Version-Morrissey/dp/B0013VSYR6" target="blank">greatest hits</a> compilation. One assumes that will be cleared up in time for the tour. No point promoting an album fans can't buy...right?<br /><br />Anyway, recent live staple "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" will be the first single, released February 9th and featuring b-sides "Because Of My Poor Education" and "Shame Is The Name" (the latter with backing vocals by Chrissie Hynde). Details on formats are forthcoming.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4vF5WWcVULDgFBAOjeqx7kYEmrofo7mMWlyME2j2a0in3tDgZfMKUn9QGm1p282oEPhzzPknE3n1quhPXtjdK0iusgjjRrlOGAmviu7vbFeddS2o2oVgnViPKsnyYf5bvFU-cdwCVAUg/s1600-h/southpaw+grammar.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276450248658809170" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 250px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4vF5WWcVULDgFBAOjeqx7kYEmrofo7mMWlyME2j2a0in3tDgZfMKUn9QGm1p282oEPhzzPknE3n1quhPXtjdK0iusgjjRrlOGAmviu7vbFeddS2o2oVgnViPKsnyYf5bvFU-cdwCVAUg/s320/southpaw+grammar.jpg" border="0" /></a>BMG's reissue of <em>Southpaw Grammar</em> is set to be released the week after <em>Years Of Refusal</em>. As previously mentioned, it will be remastered and feature three unreleased tracks from the recording sessions as well as new cover art (the typography of which is vaguely <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changesonebowie" target="blank">ChangesOneBowie</a></em>-like, no?). The tracklisting has been re-sequenced, which is interesting. I wonder if he's trying to set an often misunderstood album in a new context.<br /><br />It has also been reported that Universal will reissue a remastered and redesigned <em>Maladjusted</em> at the same time though details of bonus tracks (if there are any) and cover art have yet to be announced.Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-82019857533422657902008-12-05T12:37:00.000-08:002008-12-05T12:38:02.931-08:00The Girl With The Patent Leather Face<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcOBxGLoKjv-FnRwYHMMV8FAyEAaVtqAb9-p9-G_gE65pa-PlA2YoZAHR2wFTq8lnbKzEe9mcEYtL0I9HuPHwN7pIMvd9KwdtV5wpcYXcFkd4COSl-KEBaCJ_ZKcz1tqsysrAo7ZA3lFA/s1600-h/somebizzarealbum.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229337559507111426" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcOBxGLoKjv-FnRwYHMMV8FAyEAaVtqAb9-p9-G_gE65pa-PlA2YoZAHR2wFTq8lnbKzEe9mcEYtL0I9HuPHwN7pIMvd9KwdtV5wpcYXcFkd4COSl-KEBaCJ_ZKcz1tqsysrAo7ZA3lFA/s320/somebizzarealbum.jpg" border="0" /></a>I don't know how I missed this, but seminal 80s compilation <em><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Some-Bizzare-Album-Various-Artists/dp/B00180OTL2" target="blank">Some Bizzare Album</a></em> has been reissued on CD for the first time since a limited pressing in 1992. Prior to that it was only available on vinyl which had become rather scarce and was selling for loads on eBay.<br /><br />The record is probably most famous for featuring <a href="http://www.depechemode.com/" target="blank">Depeche Mode</a>'s first released recording: the "Some Bizzare Version" of "Photographic" (which was made considerably less rare by its inclusion on <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Singles-81-85-Depeche-Mode/dp/B00000HY5N" target="blank">The Singles 81>85</a></em>) as well as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_Cell" target="blank">Soft Cell</a>'s "The Girl With The Patent Leather Face" which has never been released anywhere else. The The and Blancmange also make rare early appearances.<br /><br />In other Soft Cell news, their classic first album <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Non-Stop-Erotic-Cabaret-Soft-Cell/dp/B00114XRVS" target="blank">Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret</a></em> has been given the deluxe edition treatment. The 2-disc set features the album as well as its companion remix album <em>Non-Stop Exotic Dancing</em> and various period b-sides and non-album singles. I'll have to do some research to see if this is the definitive version of the album (I have two other pressings) but something tells me it won't be. Typical.<br /><br />A remix album called <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Heat-Remixes-Soft-Cell/dp/B001E44250" target="blank">Heat: The Remixes</a></em> was released simultaneously. It features 26 remixes by Manhattan Clique, Richard X, Playgroup, Solvent, and Atomizer and a host of others. I haven't delved into all of it yet but the remixes I've heard did a good job at the balancing act of maintaining respect for - and the spirit of - the original track while still giving it a contemporary update.<br /><br />Listen:<br /><br /><a title="Soft Cell - The Girl With The Patent Leather Face.mp3" href="http://www.snapdrive.net/files/173593/Soft%20Cell%20-%20The%20Girl%20With%20The%20Patent%20Leather%20Face.mp3">Soft Cell - The Girl With The Patent Leather Face</a><br /><a title="Soft Cell - Seedy Films (Richard X Remix).mp3" href="http://www.snapdrive.net/files/173593/Soft%20Cell%20-%20Seedy%20Films%20(Richard%20X%20Remix).mp3">Soft Cell - Seedy Films (Richard X Remix)</a>Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-2711786156513562522008-12-05T09:43:00.000-08:002008-12-05T11:31:00.348-08:004AD 2008 SamplerThe folks over at <a href="http://www.4ad.com/" target="blank">4AD</a> have offered up a sampler of stuff they've released in 2008 and for the small price of your e-mail address you can download them all for free.<br /><br />Remember the days when a 4AD sampler might be bound in a hard cover <a href="http://designarchives.aiga.org/entry.cfm/eid_9070" target="blank">book</a>, or come in a limited edition wooden <a href="http://eyesore.no/html/ident/703.html" target="blank">box</a>? Duffy, Adele, and Jonas brothers are up for Best New Artist and if that doesn't sum it up perfectly, I don't know what will.<br /><br />Some of my favorites are nominated for awards: <a href="http://www.robyn.com/" target="blank">Robyn</a> is up for Best Electronic/Dance Album, <a href="http://www.rufuswainwright.com/" target="blank">Rufus Wainwright</a> got a nod for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, and <a href="http://www.radiohead.com/" target="blank">Radiohead</a> was nominated for several awards including Album of the Year, Best Rock Song, and Best Alternative Music Album.<br /><br />I wonder whether - if <a href="http://www.miauk.com/" target="blank">M.I.A.</a> wins Record of the Year for "Paper Planes" - the <a href="http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2008/08/mia-under-scrutiny-for-using-terrorist-imagery.html" target="blank">terrorists</a> will have won by proxy. Totally kidding. I'm not a huge fan but I think it'd be pretty cool if she won it. She's anything but boring. And she's not Adele. It begins a run at the IFC Center in New York on December 17 and will also play at Landmark Cinemas in Berkeley and San Francisco starting January 23, 2009. Other cities are still being sorted out. I'm crossing my fingers for LA! If you're interested in seeing the film in a theatre near you, check out <a href="http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=44405638&blogID=450409511" target="blank">this post</a> from director Stephen Kijak.<br /><br />For those unable to make it to a screening, the critically acclaimed film is scheduled to be released on DVD by <a href="http://www.plexifilm.com/" target="blank">Plexifilm</a> in Spring '09.<br /><br />In other Scott Walker news, a tribute album is in the works to coincide with the US release of the film. Artists signed up for the project include Saint Etienne, Dot Allison, Damon & Naomi, Laurie Anderson, Ulrich Schnauss, The Duke Spitit. Sounds like it'll be great.<br /><br />Watch the trailer for <em>30 Century Man</em>:<br /><br /><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dBMJ79ly3B4&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dBMJ79ly3B4&hl=" width="425" height="344" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" fs="1"></embed>Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-71825695368325682542008-08-21T15:58:00.000-07:002008-08-21T17:24:41.396-07:00Always The Bridesmaid<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdJ7dBtkkqdoW84ZcrOfZIdubE3MkvuSqkIGFrVjXOtA6xZicImXBvEh_0oYj9_HfufTUVGArCi4Nf0NUpl66oWhYq5-EVrljD54XzkD7qcRn45yNoIxhd42Zmtd_KvBDUaradQXn2aOE/s1600-h/decemberists+valerie+plame.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237109509475915106" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdJ7dBtkkqdoW84ZcrOfZIdubE3MkvuSqkIGFrVjXOtA6xZicImXBvEh_0oYj9_HfufTUVGArCi4Nf0NUpl66oWhYq5-EVrljD54XzkD7qcRn45yNoIxhd42Zmtd_KvBDUaradQXn2aOE/s320/decemberists+valerie+plame.jpg" border="0" /></a>I've been sworn to secrecy for a few weeks but can now report that <a href="http://www.decemberists.com/" target="blank">The Decemberists</a> have a bunch of releases in the pipeline.<br /><br />First up is <em><a href="http://www.decemberistsshop.dreamhosters.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=112&zenid=qkdsvjtjoi7s5dgu4furbb18o5" target="blank">Always The Bridesmaid: A Singles Series</a></em> which, as the title hints, is a series of three singles coming our way on a monthly basis. The first is called "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerie_Plame" target="blank">Valerie Plame</a>" and will be released on 10/14 via <a href="http://www.capitolrecords.com/" target="blank">Capitol</a> in the US and <a href="http://www.roughtraderecords.com/" target="blank">Rough Trade</a> in the UK. With a song title like that, methinks the band might be getting political again! Tracklists and release dates are:<br /><br /><strong>Volume I</strong> - October 14, 2008<br />A. Valerie Plame<br />B. O New England<br /><br /><strong>Volume II</strong> - November 4, 2008<br />A. Days Of Elaine<br />B1. Days Of Elaine (Long)<br />B2. I'm Sticking With You<br /><br /><strong>Volume III</strong> - December 2, 2008<br />A. Record Year For Rainfall<br />B. Raincoat Song<br /><br />The singles will be available digitally and on colored 180 gram audiophile 12" vinyl in the US and 7" vinyl and the UK and feature songs that the band felt would not fit on their forthcoming LP. I've always loved a good non-album single or three. The new album is described as "a tough bit of leather...a little mossy, a little evil." I can't wait! No release date for that just yet, but my guess is we'll see it early in 2009. While we wait, The Decemberists will perform "Valerie Plame" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on 11/3.<br /><br />Watch The Decemberists first foray into politics:<br /><br /><param value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tK3Ce9md96g&hl=en&fs=1" name="movie"></param><param value="true" name="allowFullScreen"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tK3Ce9md96g&hl=" width="425" height="344" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" fs="1" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-27847321350480735292008-08-14T19:04:00.000-07:002008-08-14T20:43:35.168-07:00Dreaming Of Dreaming<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWJd-NfS0a2xYsTYjYVZElOeUYy4jVaW-0a1lFJruVcGGXpnuDmY4eSef1WAxm9VDM4Mvd9qxlP-qtfPvTcDkcNxTFBxpadf0-QeurXHIuKIJtcTVePwDE9V31py1slL0fTkifSnIijs0/s1600-h/secret+machines.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5234576865800293922" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWJd-NfS0a2xYsTYjYVZElOeUYy4jVaW-0a1lFJruVcGGXpnuDmY4eSef1WAxm9VDM4Mvd9qxlP-qtfPvTcDkcNxTFBxpadf0-QeurXHIuKIJtcTVePwDE9V31py1slL0fTkifSnIijs0/s320/secret+machines.jpg" width="250" border="0" /></a>I was really into <a href="http://www.thesecretmachines.com/" target="blank">Secret Machines</a> around the time of their first album. A friend tipped me to the band before <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Now-Here-Nowhere-Secret-Machines/dp/B0002234H2" target="blank">Now Here Is Nowhere</a></em> while they were streaming it on their site for what seemed like months before the proper release. I ended up seeing them live three or four times in support of that album and I was a big fan.<br /><br />I have to admit, I got a bit burned out though. The problem might have been that I saw them live so many times in support of their debut that I got a bit bored (hello, Interpol) but also, I thought their second album, <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Ten-Silver-Drops-Secret-Machines/dp/B000ELL0R2" target="blank">Ten Silver Drops</a></em>, was boring. At least initially. It wasn't until months later when I took a chance on a used copy of the album that I realized it was just as good as the first.<br /><br />Album #3 (self-titled) is about to hit shelves on 10/14, self-released through <a href="http://www.worlds-fair.net/" target="blank">World's Fair</a>. Another band leaves the majors to go the indie route. I like it. There has been a line-up change (brother Benjamin left to work on <a href="http://www.myspace.com/schoolofsevenbells" target="blank">his other band</a>, which sounds pretty interesting) but based on just-released non-album track "Dreaming Of Dreaming" the sound hasn't changed all that much. And that's a good thing. I really like the new song and am looking forward to the record.<br /><br />Download: <a href="http://www.snapdrive.net/files/173593/The%20Secret%20Machines%20-%20Dreaming%20Of%20Dreaming.mp3">The Secret Machines - Dreaming Of Dreaming</a>Josephhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13667214536496896388noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7690409130330794151.post-51313101873935450092008-08-10T00:40:00.000-07:002008-08-15T01:13:24.995-07:00I Heard Wonders<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYd6DZ2OzIphbquVQ_Jkpve5Rf3sxzCms7wYWHaI0HMoyLwb8NGNhDWeLn7pcXjPaGsaR5Ea3WCUn2CEmwhWi9utcYXLzrFCdN0oamsVBUePbwfqhI4ofPpOQsKWDVGnnIMCsk80Dm3QI/s1600-h/david+holmes.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5234643232412378050" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYd6DZ2OzIphbquVQ_Jkpve5Rf3sxzCms7wYWHaI0HMoyLwb8NGNhDWeLn7pcXjPaGsaR5Ea3WCUn2CEmwhWi9utcYXLzrFCdN0oamsVBUePbwfqhI4ofPpOQsKWDVGnnIMCsk80Dm3QI/s320/david+holmes.jpg" border="0" /></a>The first proper <a href="http://www.myspace.com/davidholmesofficial" target="blank">David Holmes</a> solo album since 2000 is called <em><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Holy-Pictures-David-Holmes/dp/B001CD9K5U" target="blank">The Holy Pictures</a></em> and will be released on 9/8 (UK; no word on a US release yet).<br /><br />Lead single "I Heard Wonders" sounds like The Jesus And Mary Chain drenched in a '60s sunny summer haze and I like it.
